How DeKalb County residents can use absentee ballot drop boxes

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — With early voting less than three weeks away, we’ve been getting questions about how to request an absentee ballot and where that ballot can be returned once it’s filled out.

If you live in DeKalb County, there are 12 drop box locations set up county-wide for Tuesday’s special election, and there will be 18 in place for the general election in November.

Channel 2′s Kristen Holloway spoke to some DeKalb County residents who have decided absentee ballots are the best route for them.

“I’ve requested my absentee ballot, yes I filled out an application. I haven’t received it yet,” said Carolyn Williams of Tucker. “I just think it would be safer for me, I’m in an older group,” she added.

If you live in DeKalb County and feel an absentee ballot is the best way for you to vote, the county says you need to request an application as soon as you possibly can at dekalbvotes.com. When you get your ballot, fill it out and make sure to sign it. Once you do that, you can send it back via mail, drop it at a secure drop box location or deliver it by hand to the county elections office on Memorial Drive.

That being said, using the drop box isn’t an option for everyone.

“I want to stand in line. I don’t trust the drop box, I want to make sure that vote gets counted and I was to be there physically so I know when I press the key on the machine, my vote counts,” said Chanfra Hardeman

County officials say the drop boxes are totally secure. The say all 12 are locked to the ground and under 24-hour surveillance and ballots will be picked up daily in the days leading up to November’s general election.

DeKalb County opened three drop box locations over the past couple of weeks:

• Clarkston Library, 951 N. Indian Creek Drive, Clarkston, GA 30021
• Decatur City Hall, 509 N. McDonough St., Decatur, GA 30030
• Lou Walker Senior Center, 2538 Panola Rd., Stonecrest, GA 30058

On Monday, the county opened nine more locations:
