Airport workers, passengers call for changes after increase in altercations at Atlanta airport

ATLANTA — Airport workers and passengers are calling for change after yet another case of violence at Hartsfield-Jackson International.

The most recent video showed police arresting a man who they said punched another man on the plane train.

“I probably travel like two, three times a week,” said Victor Kent.

Kent said he has seen his share of situations.

“All the time. All the time. It’s mostly about the bags and what people can bring on. That’s the number one thing,” he said.

Channel 2 Action News has reported on several situations at the airport involving passengers and employees or passengers getting into altercations with other passengers.

Evelyn Fisher is from Las Vegas and she said she also witnessed one or two of these violent encounters while traveling.

“It is pretty crazy. I don’t understand what situation could lead up to that,” said Fisher.

Recently, the General Manager for Hartsfield-Jackson International addressed Atlanta’s City Council Transportation Committee about safety at the airport.

“We have seen an increase in this type of behavior in Atlanta Airport and across the industry,” said Balram Bheodari.

Airport leaders are discussing hiring more security.

A spokesperson for the airport released the following statement: “ATL’s top priority is to provide a safe and efficient operation. Specific security resources are in place to maintain the safety and security of the airport operations. In addition, the Department of Aviation Security, Atlanta Police, and local, state, and federal law enforcement partners will continue to work together to ensure a safe work environment for all.”

Channel 2′s Larry Spruill asked if passengers would want to see more security officers at the airport.

“Yes, if it deters from the fighting that people are getting in,” said Kent.

“It’s a great idea,” said Fisher. “People tend to listen more to people of authority.”
