ATLANTA — Police say they are searching for several gunmen following a shooting in northwest Atlanta.
Atlanta police said when they arrived at the Rolling Bends Apartments, several people were involved in a gun battle.
"The officers took cover, they called for backup, we have one person shot in the leg; he's stable at Grady hospital," Atlanta Police Deputy Chief Jeff Glazer said.
Shatora Jones’ car was caught in the crossfire.
“It went all the way through on this side. It was shot there," Jones said.
Investigators said at least one person was shot in the incident.
"I heard the shooting, I didn't see the shooting. Just heard the gunshots," parent Cristy King told Channel 2’s Justin Wilfon. “I was scared. I was frightened. Then the school got locked down and everything. It was kind of frightening."

Channel 2’s Dave Huddleston talked with a woman who was on her way to work when she got a text from the people in the Rolling Bend Daycare saying they were on the floor, with children and volunteers ducking from bullets.
"I know there are small children in there,” Vanessa Cox said. "He has two volunteers from Emory, five parents and five children, and there could be some infants as well.”
When Huddleston arrived at the scene Wednesday afternoon, police had barricaded the area as they went door to door in the apartment complex looking for the shooters.

Cox told Huddleston the people holed up in the day care center saw a man with an assault rifle.
“She visibly saw a young fellow walking through the neighborhood with an AK-47, walking through the neighborhood,” Cox said.
A nearby school was on lockdown while police searched for suspects. Parents and children trying to get home at the time were blocked by police.
The schools released students late Wednesday afternoon after the shooting scene was cleared by police.
Atlanta police told Wilfon they will continue to patrol the area through the night as they search for the gunmen.
There is still no word on what led to the shootout.
