Ex-mob boss living in Atlanta now facing murder charges in Boston

ATLANTA — Authorities have arrested a former mob boss who lived in Atlanta.

Frank Salemme had been living in Atlanta using the alias Richard Parker. He is jailed in Boston for a decades-old hit on a federal witness.

Salemme is 82 years old.%

He had a message for the prosecutor as he walked into a federal courtroom on Wednesday.

"Something to the effect of ‘Fred, fancy seeing you here again,’” said U.S. Attorney Fred Wyshak

The former mobster is charged with murdering a federal witness in 1993.

Court documents do not name the victim, but the date of the murder matches that of Steven DiSarro, a Boston nightclub manager whose body was unearthed earlier this year in Providence, Rhode Island.

"For 23 years, the DiSarro family has had more questions than answers, so they're hoping now they can get their questions answered and eventually justice for Steven," said family attorney Benjamin Urbelis.

Salemme had been living under an alias in Atlanta and was in the witness protection program.

His lawyer did not request a preliminary hearing during Wednesday's hearing and did not object to prosecutors' request that he be held without bail. %

"Mr. Salemme is prepared to go to trial. He’s healthy. We’ll see how it shakes out in the end,” said attorney Steve Boozang.

Salemme's attorney said he got wind of the new charges and was on his way to Boston to turn himself in when federal marshals nabbed him in Connecticut.

The charge against Salemme carries a maximum sentence of death or life in prison. Officials haven't said whether they will seek the death penalty.
