ATLANTA — The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating a shootout between an off-duty Atlanta police officer and an armed man.
The suspect was shot in front of the Collier Flats apartments on the 1000 block of Collier Road just before 1 a.m.
Channel 2's Steve Gehlbach has learned bullets were flying in a parking lot in between two of the buildings.
According to police, around 1 a.m. an off-duty Atlanta officer, in his personal car, and not in uniform, heard a shooting already in progress.

At the same time people were calling 911 to report shots fired at the complex.
The off-duty officer was first on the scene before other patrol officers in the area arrived.
"As he pulls into the parking spot, hears gunshots, then encounters a person with a handgun,” Capt. Cliff Johnson said. “Shots were fired. One adult male was hit and at Grady in stable, but critical condition."
Atlanta police wouldn't comment on the initial shooting, who was shooting at who or what it was over -- that will all be part of the GBI’s investigation.
