For the first time this year, there are four security checkpoints in the finish line area and at different spots along the course.

Leaders tell Channel 2's Lori Wilson they added those points after looking at best practices for major sporting events around the country.

Thousands of runners packed the mall parking lot at Lenox Square in Buckhead for the start of the 48th annual AJC Peachtree Road Race Tuesday morning.

Right beside them on the curbs and sidewalks around the course are thousands of spectators excited to cheer the runners on.

That’s why safety is a top priority.

“We rely heavily on the Atlanta Police Department and a lot of other local state and federal agencies to help us bring a fun, safe Fourth of July right here to Atlanta,” Rick Kenah said.

Officers are monitoring the crowds and what people are trying to carry with them to the race.

“It’s going to be hot. You probably don’t need to carry anything, but if you do carry something, and you have a bag, you might go through a checkpoint where they’re going to require you to empty that bag into a clear plastic bag," Kenah said.

Additionally, anything runners planned to carry in a bag were searched by police and put into a clear plastic bag as part of a number of new security measures this year.

“It just helps us to control the crowd a little bit in certain areas around the course," Kenah said. "Again, my message would be: If you don’t need to bring it, don’t take it. Make it easier to get around.”

“If the sun's out we expect big numbers," Kenah said. "I’ve heard anywhere from 100,000 to 150,000 on big days.”
