Tree falls on home of 72-year-old blind woman

ATLANTA — Strong winds caused a tree to crush the home of a blind woman living in southwest Atlanta Saturday evening. The damage split the woman's home in half.

Kimberly Height can't believe her 72-year-old mother and nephew escaped the falling tree that split their house in half.

"I'm just thankful they made it out. God is good," Height said.

The giant tree fell at around 6:30 p.m. while Height's mother, who is blind, was in her bedroom.

She says firefighters showed up at the southwest Atlanta home within minutes to break the windows to get inside and help.

"Basically had to just transport them through the window just to get out," Height said.

About half the tree is resting on the house on Laurel Avenue.

The top half spilled over onto Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, forcing Atlanta police to divert traffic.

Height has taken her mother in due to her home's damage and what was lost.
