DeKalb County college student books American Idol golden ticket to Hollywood

Another Georgian is going to Hollywood! DeKalb County native Xavier Washington booked his golden ticket during Sunday night’s show.

The 23-year-old told Channel 2′s Heather Catlin he was confident going into the competition and it showed.

Washington impressed the judges with his rendition of Hunter Hayes’ “Wanted” to book his ticket.

Washington graduated as his class valedictorian at Miller Grove High School in Lithonia and got accepted into 14 colleges. He decided to study at Yale University, where he will soon graduate.

Washington was also selected to sing and tour with the Yale Whiffenpoofs, one of the world’s oldest and best-known collegiate a cappella groups.

The 23-year-old isn’t the only “American Idol” contestant with Georgia connections this season.

Willie Spence, who grew up in Coffee County and now lives in Dunwoody, earned his golden ticket two weeks ago.
