Brookhaven police catch armed suspect who fired shots

BROOKHAVEN, Ga. — Brookhaven police have captured a man they say barricaded himself in an apartment at 3649 Buford Highway around 7:15 a.m.

Police took the man into custody around 2 p.m.

When police arrived at the Sierra Gardens apartment complex, they said the man was threatening suicide and fired a shot, which went through the floor of his apartment.

After police arrived, they said the man ran into the wooded area behind the apartment complex and fired at least two more shots.

Brookhaven police called officers from nearby Chamblee and Dunwoody to help them search for the man along with the North Metro SWAT team and Brookhaven’s K-9 unit.

Police described the man as a 24-year-old Hispanic male with a full beard who was carrying a hand gun.

Brookhaven police called in a crisis negotiation team that remained in communication with the suspect. A clinician from the Brookhaven Police Department’s Mental Health Co-Responder program also responded to assist.

Around 2 p.m., investigators learned he was inside an apartment at the Esquire Apartments on Buford Highway. He was taken into custody without incident. Neither the suspect or police fired shots and no one was injured.

The man is not being identified.

Earlier Saturday, Brookhaven warned residents in the surrounding areas along Clairmont Road from Buford Highway to Clairmont Way, on Buford Highway from Clairmont Terrace to Afton Land and on Clairmont Place, Clairmont Way, Wilmont Drive and Afton to stay in their home.

The lockdown has since been lifted.
