Mother charged in school fight says she was trying to break it up

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — A mother who was charged after a fight between students at a high school said she plans to fight the charges.

DeKalb County School District officials said said the woman was charged with battery for jumping into a fight at Redan High School last week.

The fight was captured on video and posted on social media. The arrest warrant said the video shows the woman "violently smacking" a 16-year-old student.

"The video is very misleading," said the mother, who did not want to be identified.

She said it appears she is pulling a girl's hair, but she said she was trying to protect her own daughter.

"I'm just a mother trying to get my child away from this before it gets worse," she said.

The alleged victim told Channel 2's Matt Johnson that the mother and two girls jumped her in the hallway.

Both sides said the girls had a falling out over the past two weeks. The mother said the girls started fighting and she wanted to stop it.

"I got into protective mode. Any mother would have done the same thing. I'm just being painted in a negative light," she said.

DeKalb school police filed an arrest warrant against the mother and she was charged.

"I think the district is covering their behinds. They have not reached out to me. They have not given me a fair chance to give a statement, to give my side," she said.

The mother said her daughter was suspended for four days. She said she will fight the charge against her in court.
