Flight from Atlanta to Brussels lands safely amid attacks

ATLANTA — The Delta flight from Atlanta to Brussels landed safely Tuesday morning, just as terror attacks rocked the city’s airport and metro system.

The three explosions killed at least 26 people and injured dozens of others.

The two explosions at the airport happened in the departure hall during the morning rush hour as hundreds of passengers were trying to check in, according to an airport spokesperson.

A flight from Atlanta to Brussels that took off Monday night landed around 8:15 a.m. local time in Brussels and was taken to a remote area.

Delta tweeted that all crew members and ground employees are safe and they were in the process of confirming the safety of all customers.

The flight from Brussels to Atlanta that was scheduled to land around 3 p.m. Tuesday has been canceled. The flight from Atlanta to Brussels that was scheduled to leave at 6:35 p.m. Tuesday has also been canceled.

The flight from New York to Brussels, which was already in the air, was diverted to Amsterdam. %

All flights have been canceled at Brussels Airport for the rest of the day. An official said the airport will remain closed at least through Wednesday.

Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport said it is on heightened alert after the attacks. The airport released the following statement Tuesday:

"Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport offers heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims of today's horrific attacks in Brussels, and to our colleagues at Brussels Airport.

In light of these attacks, the airport remains on heightened alert and will continue to coordinate with federal, state, and city law enforcement. Safety and security are always a constant focus at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport."
