Black bear visits two schools in Forsyth County

FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — A young black bear startled teachers during lunchtime Monday at Otwell Middle School in Cumming.

"We're assuming he walked up the sidewalk, and came right here to the front door and had his nose right here,” Principal Steve Miller said.

The school’s  security camera got a good picture of him.

"It was adorable. I really looked at it as there's a puppy running across the street. Until a second thought. This is a bear. Oh! It's a bear,” teacher Christina Hightower said.

A black bear,  Not fully grown yet, visiting the school around 11 Monday morning.

"Yes.  He was at the front door looking in. Yes. And that's what alerted us. We had a seventh-grade teacher coming through who screamed, 'There's a bear at the front door,'” Miller said.

The bear truly caused a stir. Security cameras also showed school staff scurrying back and forth in front of the windows as the cub darted down the sidewalk.

Neither students nor teachers nor bear were harmed during the very brief visit.

"Really?  A bear?  And then I looked.  There actually was a bear.  I got on my walkie-talkie.  Got the principal and said, we have a bear on campus,” school secretary Graciela Rosario said.

Officials believe the same bear also passed by Sawnee Elementary School earlier that same morning, about three miles from Otwell.

DNR says not to worry unless the bear gets aggressive.  He is probably headed to the north Georgia mountains.
