Surveillance video shows store clerk fight with knife-wielding robber

FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Sheriff's deputies have released surveillance video that shows a gas station attendant fighting with a knife-wielding robber.

The incident happened at the Sunoco Food Mart on Browns Bridge Road in Cumming.

Customers and people who work in the area say they aren't used to this type of violence in the area.

"That is crazy. I had no idea," one worker said after watching the video. "You know, it's common in Atlanta to see stuff like this but we just don't normally have this type of crime up this way."

"We don't have issues up here. Usually not like that," a Sunoco customer said.

Forsyth County deputies say 42-year-old Rigoberto Catalan, of Dawsonville, attacked the clerk at knife point on Sept. 15, just after 10 p.m.

The video shows the clerk and the robber fighting over the knife. The robber tries to force the woman into a storage area, but she fights back.

The robber then walks the clerk at knife point to the cash register where he demands the money.

"Did she have a silent alarm. Did she call police?" one customer asked.

Deputies said the clerk pushed a silent alarm, but the robber got away before officers got there.

Nearby businesses are alarmed by the robbery.

"That's very disturbing, especially to be next door," one man said.

The clerk said she recognized the robber. She told deputies he is a regular customer.

Deputies said they identified Catalan and arrested him. Officers said they found the clothes he wore during the robbery at his home.

Customers hope the clerk is OK.

"Too bad I couldn't have come up during that time," one man said. "I'm always loaded."

Catalan is being held without bond on armed robbery and aggravated assault charges. The clerk is back at work, but did not want to talk about what happened.
