Driver charged in crash that killed woman walking dog

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — A driver has been charged in a crash that killed a woman who was walking her dog.

According to police, Georgette Stovall, 51, was walking her dog in Snellville on June 24 when Tiffany Hayes, 31, drove on the wrong side of the road and up onto the sidewalk, hitting Stovall and her dog.

Stovall died from her injuries on July 6. Her dog, Ali, ran away from the scene after the incident, but was located June 27.

Police are trying to determine why Hayes drove onto the wrong side of the road, but they said it does not appear to be intentional.

Stovall’s family says they are glad charges were filed.

“It doesn’t bring mom back, but it’s nice someone is being held accountable for what’s happened,” daughter Samantha Stovall said.

Bill Stovall, Georgette’s husband for more than 30 years, says he still wants to know what happened.

“I'd like to know the truth of what she was doing. She wasn't on the phone from what they said, I don't know about toxicology, but something caused her to not pay attention to what she was doing,” he said.

He says he realizes he may never know the answer, but will be in court hoping to hear one. %

“This is by far the most challenging thing we've ever faced as a family. We lost the rock,” Samantha Stovall said.

Hayes has been charged with vehicular homicide, reckless driving, failure to maintain a single lane, driving on the wrong side of the highway, no insurance and tire tread.

Hayes turned herself into the Gwinnett County Jail Thursday afternoon.

Hayes posted $15,000 bond Thursday night around 9 p.m.

Stovall's family plans to be at all of the court hearings on the case to get more answers.
