Gwinnett County launches new dashboard to track COVID-19 cases in schools

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — The Gwinnett County School District has launched a new tool to track cases of COVID-19 among students and staff.

The district’s new COVID-19 dashboard shows active COVID-19 cases broken down by day and by school, as well as data on people who were in close contact with someone who was positive, as well as probable cases.

Gwinnett County, which is the state’s largest district, is one of the few districts in metro Atlanta to release reports on new cases of COVID-19 daily. There have been nearly 6,000 COVID-19 cases reported in the district since the start of the school year.

The new dashboard allows parents to see how many of those cases are currently active. On Wednesday, there were 574 active cases in the district, 61 among staff and 513 among students.

There has been a slight uptick in cases since Sept. 20, although in general there has been a significant decrease in new COVID-19 cases at Gwinnett County Schools this week compared to the peak the week of Aug. 30.

On Wednesday, the district was reporting 91 confirmed new cases and less than 1% of students impacted. There are about 200,00 students and staff in the district.

On Aug. 23, the high point for COVID-19 cases in Gwinnett County Schools, the district saw 294 cases reported in a single day.

Channel 2′s Gwinnett County Bureau Chief Tony Thomas was at a meeting of the school board Thursday nigh, where officials said despite the falling case numbers, the mask mandate will continue.

Administrators said they are following Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines for when and if the mandate should be lifted.
