Police: Man attacks stranger with baseball bat outside Walmart

Campos-Rivera is accused of attacking another man in a Walmart parking lot.

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — A violent fight over a parking spot outside a Gwinnett County Walmart has left one man with critical injuries and another in jail without bond.

Channel 2's Tony Thomas exclusively obtained video of the incident on Oct. 13 around 9 p.m.

According to police, a man was backing out of a spot and accidentally hit his horn. Kevin Campos-Rivera, the driver of a passing car, took exception, pulled over and got out of his vehicle armed with a baseball bat, police said.

“The whole thing didn’t last more than five seconds,” said Lilburn police Officer Cody Belcher.

The victim, Oscar Contreras, suffered severe head injuries, and according to police, is still trying to recover.

“It took approximately a week for him to become coherent enough to speak to us,” Belcher said. “At the time I spoke with him a week later, he was still missing his skull cap because the doctors had not put it back on there because of the swelling of the brain.”

Police said they’re trying to figure out why the incident escalated so quickly.

“His version of things is helping defend a friend who was getting jumped. We will see what the video shows,” Campos-Rivera’s attorney, Jerome Lee, said.

A judge found enough proof to hold Campos-Rivera in jail without bond.
