Lawrenceville announces curfew ahead of planned Monday protest

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — In one Gwinnett County city a curfew will start Monday night. This comes after several weekend protests, including one that got heated outside Sugarloaf Mills Mall.

Police in Lawrenceville say the curfew begins at 9 p.m.

A peaceful protest outside Sugarloaf Mills Mall on Saturday turned ugly when an officer used a stun gun on a shirtless protestor. That began other fights between protestors and police.

Four people were arrested.

Channel 2 Action News reached out to Gwinnett County police to see if the officers were being investigated for using excessive force and to learn more about the protestors arrested.

A spokesperson for the department confirmed the officers are still on active duty and sent a statement

“The police department takes all uses of force seriously and thoroughly investigates each one. Once the situation has concluded we will address any force used and an investigation will be completed with transparent results to the public. We want to thank the citizens that have assembled peacefully and we expect everyone to follow the laws and ordinances of Gwinnett County while they express themselves during this time.”

Police are applauding most of the protestors saying they were peaceful and respectful.

There is a scheduled protest at the Lawrenceville City Hall at 5 p.m. Monday.
