Man dies after deputy shocks him with Taser

BUTTS COUNTY, Ga. — A man has died after he was shocked with a Taser by deputies executing a search warrant.

Butts County deputies executed a narcotics and meth search warrant around 5 a.m. Friday at a home on Keys Ferry Road near Jackson.

There was an altercation between deputies and Douglas Tanner, 53.

A deputy shocked Tanner with a Taser. He was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

An autopsy will be performed by the GBI Crime Lab in Decatur.

Chad Hoek, 39, who was the primary resident of the home was arrested and charged with two counts of sale of methamphetamine.

A child was inside the home at the time. The child was not harmed and was turned over to family members.

No officers were injured during the incident.

Neighbor Ronald Ball told Channel 2's Lori Wilson he had no idea there was a suspected meth lab just a few doors down.

"I'm just totally surprised. Wow," he said.

The GBI is investigating the incident and will turn it over to the Butts County District Attorney's Office for review when complete.
