GILMER COUNTY, Ga. — Family and friends are frantically trying to raise money for three young boys left without parents following a tragic car crash.
“It’s just a tragic accident,” Haven Walker said through tears.
Walker’s cousin, Ashley Hatchet, and Hatchet’s husband, Joshua, were killed this week when their SUV went off Highway 382 and struck a tree head on in Gilmer County.
Troopers are investigating but say they have no idea what caused their car to veer off the road.
“She was my cousin, more like a sister, and the family can desperately use the help right now. They had three little boys and neither the mom or dad had insurance,” Walker said.
"It’s hit a lot. It’s hard, real hard. I mean Ashley was a good person. You never saw her frown. She was always smiling,” said family friend Vicki Reece.
The family is now focusing on the couple’s three boys, ages 8, 7, and 5. They are living with their grandparents.
They say they told the oldest son hours after the tragic crash.
“He said he wouldn’t have no family no more,” Reece said.
There is a custody hearing going on to figure out who will take care of the children. The parents did not have a will or leave any direction as to who would take care of the kids if they both died.
