Manhunt underway for gunman who shot store clerk

WOODBURY, Ga. — Agents with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and police are searching for a gunman who shot a father of three at a convenience store in Woodbury.

They say the shooting, which happened about 10 p.m. Saturday, started out as an attempted robbery.

Police Chief Wesley Favors told Channel 2's Rikki Klaus the shooter first demanded money from a janitor at the Quick Stop on Main Street.

“The janitorial person stated that the gunman pointed a handgun at him and told him to get behind the counter,” Favors said.

Meanwhile, Favors said the clerk, Vishnu Chaudhari, swung a stick at the suspect.

"He turns and shoots the cashier in the left shoulder at close range," Favors told Klaus.

The chief said the bullet went through Chaudhari's back, but he was able to call 911.

Surveillance video captured the shooter, whose face was covered with material, running out the back of the store and into the woods behind.

"He's wearing a hoodie and several items that can be hindering to the video, but I think we should be able to make out who the possible suspect was," Favors said.

Klaus tried to contact the store’s owner Sunday, but the store was closed.

Favors said the incident is the second violent incident at the Quick Stop in the last six months.

"This happened at the same location approximately four or five months ago, on a different magnitude. It wasn't as bad. It was a gun pointed at a cashier,” Favors told Klaus.

The police chief said it was the same cashier targeted in this incident. They are investigating whether it's the same suspect.

Favors said Chaudhari is expected to recover from his injuries.
