Trial continues in deadly World Changers church shooting

COLLEGE PARK, Ga. — Testimony continues in the trial of a man accused of murdering a church member during a prayer service.

On Thursday, prosecutors showed video of World Changer International members running for their lives after gunfire erupted inside the church in 2012.

The jury watched the video, along with a couple of witnesses, who relived the deadly shooting.

One witness broke down and testified she saw Floyd Palmer, a former church member, shoot praise leader Greg McDowell 12 times.

“And I was saying, ‘Why you still shooting?’ I said, ‘because he's already down,’’’ said witness Mary Lou Harris.

The shooting happened inside the church while McDowell was praying.

“He was constantly shooting at that time. I mean, I wasn't counting. I was running for cover,” Harris said.

Another witness said Palmer looked at him after the shooting.

"He had the gun in his hands. He was looking at me face to face,” said church member Dexter Heard.

Prosecutors say Palmer left the church and eventually made his way to Macy’s in Lenox Square. A Macy’s employee said he heard about the shooting on social media, then came face-to-face with Palmer.

“We made eye contact… we didn’t have a conversation. Nothing,” she said.

Before that, Atlanta police officer Donovan Clements said Palmer came up to him and tried to turn himself in, but he couldn’t tell him why he needed to be arrested.

Palmer's attorney said he's mentally ill and thought McDowell and the church were out to get him.

"Floyd Palmer was insane. He had insane thoughts in his mind,” said attorney Marissa Goldberg.

The assistant district attorney said Palmer knew what he was doing.

"And there will be no evidence presented before you that Mr. Palmer is legally insane,” said assistant district attorney Simone Hylton.

Palmer's attorney never denied he pulled the trigger, and believes he's guilty by reason of insanity.
