County-by-county: Irma cleanup begins across Georgia

Wind and rain from Irma led to flooding and downed trees and power lines across Georgia.

As of Tuesday morning, Georgia Power and Georgia Emergency Management were reporting nearly 1.3 million people in Georgia without power.

Channel 2's Chris Jose is in Brunswick where there are trees toppled down across the roadways.

He found neighbors working to remove the trees that are making travel difficult.

Jose said there are downed power lines in some neighborhoods. There was also significant flooding in the streets Monday afternoon. The water receded by Monday night.

City and county officials are urging people to stay inside.

Jose spoke to families who said trees came dangerously close their homes.

"We knew there was a risk when we decided to stay. We knew that from the last time," Neely Hunter said.

SANDY SPRINGS

Channel 2's Mike Petchenik learned a 55-year-old man was killed when a tree fell on his home on Hardeman Drive in Sandy Springs.

Strong wind caused trees to come down in several areas.

A homeowner on Kingston Drive said he heard a tree start to crack and then suddenly it was on top of his house.

It went through the roof and damaged the inside of the home. Nobody was injured.

Petchenik spoke to a representative from a tree removal company who said because gusty wind is expected throughout the day, they can’t bring a crane in until at least Tuesday.

“This afternoon we’ll get plenty of calls, I assume. Tomorrow will be a day of action when everything has calmed down. Hopefully enough for us to get out and hopefully begin the work,” said Jonathan Potts with Gunnison Tree Company.

Police said Hammond Drive between GA 400 and Peachtree Dunwoody Road was shut down due to downed trees and power lines.

Georgia Power warns that downed power lines or low hanging wires are dangerous and deadly.

ATLANTA

Peachtree Street between Decatur Street and Auburn Avenue was closed due to debris falling from a building as winds picked up from Tropical Storm Irma. The debris was falling from the 34 Peachtree Street building.

Wind brought down a light pole in Midtown on Peachtree Street at Beverly Road.

Severe Weather Team 2 Meteorologist Brian Monahan said a tree came down on 14th Street at Juniper Street in Midtown.

DEKALB COUNTY

Channel 2's Linda Stouffer came across a tree down on Clifton Church Road in DeKalb County.

Neighbors said power lines sparked as the tree crashed down.

Stouffer said a large tree fell on a home in DeKalb County. Nobody was injured.

Channel 2's Liz Artz said a tree was blocking a road in DeKalb County.

Channel 2's Carl Willis said a tree fell on a home on Desmond Drive in Decatur. Two rooms were damaged, but the family said no one was injured.

COBB COUNTY

Crews worked to remove a tree that came down in Marietta. The tree fell on Bryant Lane, just south of Shallowford Road. Channel 2's Ross Cavitt spoke to firefighters who said they are putting together teams to deal with trees down throughout the day.

CLAYTON COUNTY

Crews responded to a tree down on Jodeco Drive in Jonesboro.

The tree fell and knocked down power lines as the wind continues to pick up.

Channel 2's Lori Wilson said there are several other trees down in parts of Clayton County.

Officials are asking people to stay off the roads, which are covered in branches and debris.

Wilson spoke to neighbors who said their power has been in and out.

GWINNETT COUNTY

Channel 2's Rikki Klaus said a large tree split in half and fell on a Gwinnett County home off of Old Peachtree Road.

Klaus learned fallen trees and power lines were widespread throughout the county. More than 50,000 people were without power.

A woman came home from the movies to find a tree had fallen through the roof of her home in Dacula. She said only a few item, including a drum set, were damaged. No one was injured.

"Hopefully it doesn't get worse," Nicole Cobb said.

A large tree narrowly missed a home on Rockborough Trail in Norcross.

DOUGLAS COUNTY

Severe Weather Team 2 Meteorologist Katie Walls said a tree fell on a home on Pope Road in Douglasville.

No one in the home was injured.

Walls said trees have come down on power lines in other parts of Douglasville.

OCONEE COUNTY

A large tree snapped in half in front of a family's home on Hog Mountain Road in Oconee County.

Channel 2's Sophia Choi said no one was hurt.

Choi spoke to the emergency management director in Oconee County who said they expect more trees to come down. Officials said residents should be prepared to lose electricity.
