Death of woman found inside house fire ruled homicide

Habersham County fire

HABERSHAM COUNTY, Ga. — A man has been arrested in connection with a fire where a woman was found dead Saturday.

The Habersham County Sheriff’s Office said they arrested Jeremy Chastain during a traffic stop Sunday.

Investigators say he started a fire at a cabin on Yonah Post Road in Alto around 6:45 a.m. Saturday.

A woman who was inside at the time did not survive. She has been identified as 43-year-old Alecia Stover of Alto. But Stover’s death was not a result of the fire.

The county coroner said Stover died from blunt force injuries to her head. Her death has officially been ruled a homicide by the sheriff’s office.

The GBI and State Fire Marshal’s Office and Habersham County Sheriff’s Office are investigating the cause of the fire.
