Groom-to-be paralyzed weeks before wedding

ATLANTA — Brett Greenhill and his bride-to-be, Megan Alexander, connected during a chance encounter. She struck up conversation and the two never looked back.

They were set to be married in the new year. The couple traveled to Florida to celebrate their upcoming wedding. They joined their bachelor and bachelorette parties and were enjoying the weekend in South Florida when tragedy struck.

Brett jumped into the water at a beach in Naples, Florida where he apparently hit his head on something.

Members of the wedding party found him floating. They pulled him from the water. He was conscious, but he couldn’t move or feel anything below his neck.

"Pray," said Greenhill's father, Jim Greenhill. "If there is a power of prayer, this is the greatest opportunity of all to help a human being who deserves it."

Brett underwent surgery to remove fragments of his shattered vertebrae. He was paralyzed from the neck down just 10 weeks away from his wedding day.

So far, Brett has had a problem with an infection and fluid on his lungs. His father said there is hope for the Walker School and Emory University graduate.

"There's some sensation and there's some improvement," he said. "We're looking for some fractions of miracles."

Brett will need help with mounting medical bills and changes that will need to be made to his home.

So far, a GoFundMe page has raised nearly $90,000.

Brett's father believes a miracle can happen.

"There are so many great people out there," said Jim Greenhill. "It's so heartwarming and encouraging."
