ROME, Ga — Postponing the Boston Marathon did not stop elite wheelchair athletes from racing together. Georgia-based Paralympian and former AJC Peachtree Road Race champion Krige Schabort joined an international virtual race from Rome along with four other Georgia racers.
In all, 64 athletes from more than 13 countries joined the noncompetitive race through Zoom. They pushed for 1:18:04 which is the Boston Marathon record time set in 2017. The event was organized in just 36 hours by U.S. Paralympian Daniel Romanchuk.
Participants ranged in age from 10 to 60 and represented every continent except for Antarctica.
