8-Year-Old Hospitalized After Shooting

ATLANTA — An 8-year-old girl was hospitalized Sunday afternoon after a shooting in Atlanta, police said.

Channel 2's George Howell was at the scene on Selwin Avenue, where more than 30 shell casings were lying on the ground.

Atlanta police spokesman James Polite said they were looking for multiple people in the shooting of 8-year-old Eriyona Stone and a 20-year-old neighbor. Police would not comment on a motive, but family members said it was retaliation for a robbery.

Stone's older sister, Garyonna, said the shooters came looking for a male neighbor, who hangs around the house. She said his brother is in jail, so they took revenge on him instead, and her sister got caught in the mayhem.

Family members said there were five children and at least three adults in the house when shots rang out. Garyonna said the shooters shot up the house, and she dodged bullets from a bedroom window.

"I was sitting up there trying to iron my mamas clothes, then I just heard something blew through, bust my window and I seen the bullet over my head and I got on the floor," Garyonna said.

She said she ran upstairs to get her sister, but it was too late. She said Eriyona had fallen on the ground with a bullet to her stomach.

The child and the other victim were taken to an area hospital, Polite said. He said the 20-year-old was shot in the arm.

"I'm just hoping my little sister is OK," Garyonna said.
