Clayton County high schools shift start times

CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. — Some students heading back to school in Clayton County will get to sleep longer. The district is delaying start times for some students so they are more rested.

Clayton County School Superintendent Luvenia Jackson says for the system to succeed, students aren't the only ones who had to learn a new way of looking at things.

Jackson came out of retirement in 2012 as interim superintendent and became the superintendent in 2014.

Jackson says the culture change in her district has yielded dividends.

"We had 17 schools that were on the focus and alert list," Jackson said. "Fourteen of those schools were removed."

The district is touting its move to slide the school day back 20 minutes for high school students.
