Damon Evans Out As UGA Athletic Director

ATHENS, Ga.,None — University of Georgia officials said Damon Evans submitted his resignation Sunday and the executive committee of the UGA Athletic Association unanimously accepted it Monday.

Evans will get a $100,000 longevity bonus in addition to three months salary as severance.

UGA president Michael Adams released a statement that said, in part, "As I said on Thursday morning when I first learned of the situation, this is not an example of the kind of leadership that I expect our senior leadership to set. I have high regard for Damon personally; I care deeply about him and his family."

Evans released a statement Monday afternoon that said, in part, "I would like to once again offer my sincerest apology to the University of Georgia people -- the president and administration, athletic staff and coaches, fans and supporters, and especially the student-athletes. It had been my hope since taking the job in 2004 that I would have a long career at UGA. But because of a serious mistake in judgment, that won't be the case and I understand that I have a long road to rebuilding my reputation and career."

Evans' resignation was first reported on Channel 2 Action News on Sunday after a source close to the UGA Athletic Department told Channel 2 Sports Director Zach Klein that Evans was out as the school's athletic director.

Klein said there were several possible internal candidates to replace Evans, including Associate Athletic Director for Internal Operations Arthur Johnson and Senior Associate Athletic Director Carla Williams. University of Florida Executive Senior Athletics Director Greg McGarity is also a potential candidate, according to Klein.

Evans was arrested for DUI late Wednesday night. Evans refused a Breathalyzer test and spent the night in jail. Courtney Fuhrmann, 28, was in the car with Evans. Fuhrmann was arrested for disorderly conduct. Evans later called Fuhrmann "just a friend."
