CAMDEN COUNTY, Ga — A metal walkway attached to a pier in southeast Georgia collapsed, causing 17 people injuries, according to a release from St. Marys, Ga City Manager Robert T. Horton.

Of those 17 injured, six were taken to a hospital to treat their more serious injuries.

The incident took place in St. Mary’s, Ga, which is right on the Florida-Georgia line.

“A group of retired submarine sailors from the USS Angler and their spouses had gathered for a tour and river cruise on the St. Marys River. Their river cruise boat was secured to a floating dock, and passengers were in the process of making their way to the floating dock when the metal walkway attached to the pier gave way and collapsed,” Horton said in the release.

Witnesses, including those who were on the walkway and those who were standing on the pier, heard a sudden loud noise before the walkway fell into the river, the release said.

The piers and ramps in this area will be closed for an undetermined amount of time to allow engineers the opportunity to inspect the pier and make appropriate corrections to improve the dock’s safety, according to the release.
