Fall colors are in full effect in north Georgia

BARTOW COUNTY, Ga — The peak of fall colors is happening right now, in late October.

With the leaves peaking in the intensity of their colors, Channel 2 Severe Weather Meteorologist Eboni Deon went searching for the best place to take it all in.

Fall colors are starting to pop all around north Georgia, but it’s happening even sooner than usual. The best place for viewing might just be your backyard.

Kateena Morris has noticed a variety of colors at Red Top Mountain.

“It’s so beautiful. I love all the different colors. Fall is actually one of my favorite seasons because of the changing of the leaves,” Morris said. “Red, brown, yellow, the bright green.”

Morris says while camping, she really enjoys the scenery and peace it brings.

“Just being able to relax and being one with nature,” Morris said.

The highest elevations of north Georgia are already past peak, but there are still plenty of colors to see. The lower elevations continue to transform. Some oaks are going from green to yellow and orange.

Peak fall foliage in Georgia usually is from late October to early November, but thanks to summer rainfall followed by a number of cool nights and warm afternoons this fall, peak fall foliage has started early.

Kim Hatcher, public affairs coordinator for Georgia State Parks — also known as the leaf lady — says you don’t have to go far to view changing colors.

“We’re seeing some really pretty early fall color,” Hatcher said.

Channel 2 flew a drone over midtown Atlanta where maples, dogwoods and poplars are showing some yellows and orange.

“The sumacs are really showing some really beautiful red right now,” Hatcher said.

Hatcher says there are many green maples that will pop in color soon. It is all about location and elevation for checking out fall color.

“Vogel State Park, Amicalola Falls, Cloudland Canyon, Black Rock Mountain are all really gorgeous. As you can see, Red Top Mountain is really pretty,” Hatcher said.

Fall leaves will continue to show off over the next few weeks. We should be able to enjoy the colorful show at least until mid-November, according to Deon.
