UPSON COUNTY, Ga. — Strangers and loved ones came together in Thomaston Saturday to pray for two Rock Hill Volunteer Fire Department firefighters.
It has been one week since Logan Gordy and Trista Cheeks were hospitalized after their fire engine flipped as they responded to wreck in Upson County.
Fire Chief Alan Yarbrough was in the crowd to give an update on their conditions. They are both still in the Intensive Care Unit at Grady Hospital in Atlanta.

“It’s tough, you know,” said Yarbrough. “We witness this type of stuff all the time in wrecks, but we’re never witnessing our own family we’re having to cut out of vehicles and pull out and life flights. I’ve got some firefighters that are really having a hard time.”
Gordy and Cheeks are engaged to be married in October. The pair took their engagement photos the same day of the crash.
Their well known in the community for being part of a family of helpers. Gordy’s father is a volunteer firefighter as well.

People they’ve helped in Upson County said they want to return the favor.
“He really stepped up for my family,” said one 12-year-old, Serenity Hurlburt.
She is coming up with ways to bring strangers together for support. The prayer vigil July 22 will be followed by a fundraiser next Saturday. Donations will go to the family.

“For their medication, their medical bills and help their family for what they’re about to have to go through,” said Hurlburt.
So far, Chief Yarbrough said they’ve been able to raise more than $8,000 for the family.
Gordy is 22 years old. Cheeks is 20. Both are still in comas.
