Just after 2 a.m. on Friday, a TCSO sheriff’s deputy spotted a silver Honda sedan without a tag and initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle on Plott Town Road in Young Harris in Towns County.

The driver of the car stopped but immediately got out of the car and walked towards the deputy, officials said.

He refused to obey the deputy’s commands, resulting in the deputy attempting to tase the driver, however, his attempt was unsuccessful. The deputy and the man fought over the deputy’s gun, and he was subsequently shot.

The man drove away in the Honda, however, he did not take the deputy’s gun.

Law enforcement officials and EMS responded to the scene to assist and provide care to the deputy. He was taken to the hospital for treatment where his injuries were determined to be non-life threatening.
