Man in critical condition after being shot during high-speed chase, GBI says

HARALSON COUNTY, Ga. — The Georgia Bureau of Investigation says a man is in critical condition after he was shot during a high-speed chase Saturday afternoon.

According to investigators, a man identified as 30-year-old Willie Austin was caught speeding by Polk County police officer.

A chase ensued when Austin failed to stop. The officer followed Austin into Haralson County where the sheriff’s office and Georgia State Patrol became involved.

A Georgia State Patrol trooper performed a P.I.T. maneuver on the truck. As a trooper and deputy approached the truck, the GBI says Austin drove the truck toward a trooper and Haralson County deputy, who fired shots into the truck.

Austin was injured in the shooting and taken to a local hospital for treatment.

No officers were injured in this incident. A female passenger was also inside the truck at the time of the shooting but was not injured.
