New bridge over I-16 opens to replace one hit by dump truck

TREUTLEN COUNTY, Ga. — A new bridge that crosses over a busy Georgia interstate has opened to traffic.

It comes just over a year after a truck crashed into the old bridge and shifted it several feet.

The Highway 86 bridge opened to traffic Friday, which crosses over Interstate 16 in Treutlen County.

Last July, a dump truck that had its bed raised hit the bridge, shifting it 6 feet. The bridge had to be demolished because of safety reasons.

Interstate 16 between Exit 71 and 78 was shut down for several days while crews cleared debris and figured out what to do with the heavily damaged bridge.

The Georgia Department of Transportation said the new bridge opened to traffic Friday morning even though there are a few things that need to be done on it.

“There are a few more finishing items remaining on this project, but traffic may continue using the bridge while those are completed,” DOT said in a Facebook post.

The bridge project took just over a year to complete.
