MERIWETHER COUNTY, Ga. — The sheriff of Meriwether County has released more details about the arrest of the person suspected of killing a person on Saturday at Fort Eisenhower.
Meriwether County Sheriff Chuck Smith said the suspect was arrested on Interstate 85 on Saturday.
Deputies received information about a wanted murder suspect traveling through the county and were provided a description of the suspect’s vehicle and direction of travel.

Deputies located the suspect on southbound I-85 around mile marker 29.
According to the sheriff, the suspect threw a handgun out of the passenger side of the vehicle during the traffic stop.
The sheriff did not release any details about the suspect.
“I appreciate the work that our personnel and all other supporting agencies did in the apprehension of this wanted suspect. I am grateful that the suspect was taken into custody without further incident during this high-risk encounter. Our personnel did an outstanding job which is a testament to the dangers and risk that law enforcement officers face daily with positive results.” Sheriff Smith said.
Fort Eisenhower officials said someone was shot and killed Saturday in on-post housing.
The victim has not been publicly identified either.
Fort Eisenhower, located near Augusta, was locked down for about an hour on Saturday.
