DECATUR COUNTY, Ga. — A South Georgia district attorney has filed a motion seeking to intervene in a lawsuit over a proposed monkey breeding facility in the City of Bainbridge.

Safer Human Medicine (SHM), a company that breeds monkeys for use in medical research, made a deal with Decatur County leaders to build a large breeding facility.

After months of legal battles, the Georgia Court of Appeals ruled in favor of SHM.

Now South Georgia Circuit District Attorney Joseph Mulholland has filed a motion to intervene in SHM’s breach of contract lawsuit against county officials.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) praised Mulholland for filing the motion.

“PETA stands with Bainbridge residents in opposing this monkey warehouse, which will harm animals, reduce property values, and likely spoil the rivers and lands surrounding it,” the group said in a statement.

SHM outlined their intentions in an open letter to residents of Decatur County, saying, “The health and welfare of animals under our care is our top priority. We are building state-of-the-art facilities with plenty of space, air, and light. This is not a research facility and is strictly an animal husbandry facility meant to house and care for primates (see attached photos). Animals will be housed in groups so that they can interact and play with one another. We will provide them with toys, opportunities for foraging and other forms of enrichment. We will supplement their diet with fresh local produce straight from the surrounding community. The welfare of our animals will always come first, and we will provide them with the care they deserve.
