RICHMOND COUNTY, Ga — A soldier is dead and 9 others are injured after they were hit by a lightning bolt while on a range at Fort Gordon, base spokesperson Anne Bowman confirmed.
The Army base is located in Richmond County, near Augusta.
“It is with a heavy heart Fort Gordon confirms one of the Soldiers injured in the lightning strike this afternoon succumbed to their injuries. No name will be released until the next of kin have been notified,” the base said in a statement.

Bowman said the incident occurred at approximately 11:10 am at Training Area 26 at a time when there was lightning in the area.

The ten soldiers were taken to a local hospital, for treatment, according to Bowman.
The extent of their injuries is unknown at this time.
