Visitors to north Georgia mountains make the most out of late-winter snow

FANNIN COUNTY, Ga. — A Florida family got to enjoy an unfamiliar sight on Saturday: a rare southern snowfall.

Heather Schultz and her family said that when they heard it could snow in Georgia this weekend, it was the perfect time to book their cabin trip.

“I have not seen snow in probably 15 years,” Schultz said. “It’s the first time for my daughter and she’s 12. We’re really excited.”

The Schultz family lives north of Orlando and left their hometown early Friday night so they could watch the snow come down.

“I brought beanies and everything,” Schultz said. “We don’t need beanies in Florida.”

“She was happy to get me out of the state of Florida,” Schultz’s husband Aaron said. “I’m always like, ‘Let’s just go to the beach.’”

On Saturday, snow blanketed the northwest region of Georgia. The Fannin County Sheriff’s Office says it did not receive an overwhelming number of crash or damage reports. However, bridges and side streets were slick in the early morning hours.
