Gwinnett County inmates jump in to help deputy having a stroke

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — A group of Gwinnett County inmates are being praised for their efforts to help a deputy having a stroke.

Last Sunday, Gwinnett County Sheriff Deputy Patrick Edmund was doing a routine cell search for illegal items when he felt dizzy.

“His words started slurring, his face started locking up,” inmate Jattir Moton said.

Edmund kept saying he was “good,” but then he fell. The inmates rushed in and used deputy Edmund’s radio to call for help.

“A lot of people assume that there is a very adversarial relationship between law enforcement officers and people suspected of criminal activity” said Shannon Volkodav, a Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson.

Volkodav said the inmates could see that Edmunds was suffering a stroke, so they sat him down on a chair until paramedics arrived.

“It is very reasonable to believe that the actions saved Deputy Edmunds’ life that day,” Volkodav said.

Moton describes Edmunds as a “real standup guy.”

Edmunds was flown to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, where he underwent emergency surgery.

Edmunds is doing fine and has been cleared to return to work. The Gwinnett County Sheriff’s office asked him to stay home a few more days and recover.
