Level 1 risk for severe storms in some north Georgia counties Sunday

ATLANTA — Heavy rain and potentially severe storms are expected to stick around until Sunday evening in parts of northern Georgia.

Severe Weather Team 2 Meteorologist Eboni Deon said the most significant threats would be over middle and south Georgia, including some north Georgia counties with a Level 1 of 5 severe weather threat.

As of now, Chief Meteorologist Brad Nitz says the severe threat has moved to middle and south Georgia where a tornado watch has been issued. We’re still monitoring the possibility of isolated storms affecting the southernmost counties later this afternoon, but that is looking less likely now.

“The worst appears over for us,” Nitz said.

One of our areas did receive storm damage, according to Nitz. Troup County’s emergency manager reported “several trees on a house and areas of significant wind damage” occurred in the West Point, Ga. area.

No injuries were reported.

While we’re out of the path of storms, the long-advertised return to cold is incoming. A freeze watch has been issued for all of metro Atlanta and north Georgia, beginning Monday night into Tuesday morning. Temperature will range from the mid-20s to low 30s.
