10-year-old Georgia girl dead after suspected drunk driver with open container crashes into ditch

VALDOSTA, Ga. — A 10-year-old Georgia girl was killed in a car accident when a suspected drunk driver drove off the road in Lowndes County, according to the Valdosta Daily.

Autumn Schmid was riding in a car driven by Jodie Everidge on Saturday when deputies said Everidge drove off the road and went into a ditch, hitting a tree.

Two other passengers in the car, a 38-year-old woman and a 7-year-old girl were taken to the hospital with minor injuries. They have not been identified.

Everidge has been charged with homicide by vehicle, reckless driving, driving under the influence, two counts of safety restraint, failure to secure a minor 7 and under, possession of an open alcohol container, improper/erratic lane change, willful obstruction of law enforcement officers, littering and endangering a child while driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, according to jail records.

“(Autumn) enjoyed spending her days at the lake with her daddy and having spa days at home with her mama and little sister. She loved playing softball with her team,” family members wrote in her obituary.
