12 overhead projectors stolen from Clayton Co. school

CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. — School officials said thieves have stolen 12 expensive overhead projectors from a Clayton County school.

Parent Brett Northington told Channel 2's Tom Jones children are the ones being robbed.

"You send your kids to school to get an education and people stealing the stuff that you put in there for them to get an education with," he said.

He couldn't believe it when his granddaughter, Makayla, said someone had broken into her school, Northcutt Elementary, on Monday.

"When we went to art, the windows were broken, and we couldn't go to music because they had broken into it," the fourth-grader said.

School officials said thieves came in through a window and went into four classrooms and stole four projectors.

"Those projectors can range up to a $1,000 or more sometimes," Clayton County Schools spokesman Doug Hendrix said.

Hendrix said the district has had a problem with criminals breaking into schools stealing projectors.

"At Northcutt Elementary alone, they've taken 12 projectors from our students," he said.

Hendrix said Northcutt has been hit at least three times this school year.

"Who would be so mean and desperate as to take stuff from a school from children who want to learn?" parent Devondra Hawkins said.

Sources in the school said thieves also stole computer monitors and other equipment. Parents said the school needs more security.

"There are sensors in the hallways but there are not sensors in the windows," Hawkins said.

Hendrix said the school is under renovation and crucial security measures will be added to keep thieves from stealing from students.
