17-year-old boy allegedly shoots, kills father after parents get into argument

DOUGLAS, Ga. — A teenager has been arrested in connection with the shooting death of his father.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation was contacted by Coffee County deputies after a 911 call led authorities to a shooting incident Tuesday morning.

It happened in the 100 block of Park Place Road in Douglas.

Around 2 a.m., on Tuesday, officials said 17-year-old Miguel Gonzalez shot and killed his father, Israel Rivera Cruz, 45, of Douglas, GA. During the incident, Miguel Gonzalez also accidentally shot his mother, Jasmine Gonzalez, 31, of Douglas.

The investigation revealed that Miguel Gonzalez approached Cruz with a gun after Cruz and Jasmine Gonzalez had been arguing. The GBI said Miguel Gonzalez and Cruz started struggling over the gun and Miguel Gonzalez eventually regained control of the gun and shot Cruz several times, killing him.

Miguel Gonzalez was arrested and charged with aggravated assault, felony murder, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. He was booked into the Coffee County Jail.

Jasmine Gonzalez was taken to the hospital but has since been released. Cruz’s body will be taken to the GBI Medical Examiner’s Office, where an autopsy will be performed.

The investigation is ongoing.
