Teen, man shot to death at Freaknik-themed party in Middle Georgia

SANDERSVILLE, Ga. — Deputies say two people are dead after a shooting at a Freaknik-themed party in Middle Georgia Saturday night.

The shooting happened at at the Larry Mitchell Ballpark in Sandersville. Flyers circulating on social media showed that organizers were hosting a 80s vs. 90s “FreakNik 22″ party starting at 4 p.m. Saturday at the park.

Freaknik is an annual spring break festival in Atlanta that was originally attended by students at Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

After the shooting broke out, two people were rushed to the emergency room, where they died.

The victims have been identified as 17-year-old Williams Mykell Lowery of Louisville and 30-year-old Christopher “Scooter” Dunn of Wrightsville.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation and the Washington County Sheriff’s Office are asking for the public’s help to identify the shooter or shooters.

It’s unclear if anyone else was injured or if the shooting was targeted.

The City of Atlanta revoked the Freaknik’s permit in 2010, but it returned in a scaled-down concert event in 2019.
