ATLANTA — At least 20 people lost their lives over the July 4th holiday weekend in Georgia, according to the Georgia Department of Public Safety.

At least eight of those fatal accidents happened in metro Atlanta including in Polk, Douglas, DeKalb, Bartow, Cherokee and Cobb counties as well as in Villa Rica, Newnan, Sandy Springs and Newnan.

In Cobb County, a Marietta man was killed in a hit-and-run crash as he crossed Austell Road shortly before 2 a.m. Sunday.

At least two more people were killed early Tuesday morning. A passenger in a car carrying 9 people was killed when a driver lost control on I-20 in DeKalb County. One person in that accident was also critically injured.
Another driver died in a fiery crash on Ralph David Abernathy around 6:15 a.m.
