At least 26 people were killed and 27 others were injured when a gunman stormed a church in rural Texas.

Authorities said the shooter walked into First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, Texas, at about 11:20 a.m. during Sunday services and opened fire. They said 26 people were killed and 27 others were injured.

Among the victims was the pastor’s 14-year-old daughter, a pregnant woman and her in-laws, and several children.

The victims range in ages from 18 months to 77 years old, authorities said.

The shooter was identified as Devin Kelley, 26, of New Braunfels, Texas. Investigators say his mother-in-law attended the church where the shooting happened. She had received threatening texts from Kelley prior to the shooting, according to authorities.

A bystander and a neighbor chased Kelley after the shooting until he crashed his car about six miles from the church. He was found dead inside the car and investigators said Monday that they believe he died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

This is the deadliest church shooting in America and the fourth-deadliest mass shooting behind Las Vegas, Orlando and Virginia Tech.

President Donald Trump was briefed several times Sunday while overseas in Japan. He offered prayers and condolences, and said the shooting is a mental health situation.

"This was a very, based on preliminary reports, a very deranged individual. A lot of problems over a long period of time," Trump said when asked about the shooting as he and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe held a joint news conference in Tokyo during Trump's first official visit to Asia.

"We have a lot of mental health problems in our country, as do other countries. But this isn't a guns situation," the president said.

Multiple weapons were found in Kelley’s vehicle, authorities said, adding that the he had tactical-type gear and was wearing a ballistic vest.

'He just kept going, kept going'

Kevin Jordan, who lives across the street from the church, told ABC News he saw the suspect "shooting as he's walking towards the church."

"He was wearing either body armor or a vest and a mask," Jordan said Sunday, "and I couldn't see his face or anything, and I saw him shooting and he just kept going, kept going.

"When I was trying to run back inside my house ... he saw me, and he took a shot off in my direction, and it went through the front window of my house. And my two-year-old son ... he was standing in the window, two feet from where it hit," Jordan said. "It almost hit him.
