DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — A mother will not be charged after her 4-year-old child found a gun in their home and shot himself in the head.
DeKalb County police said the incident happened on Cedar Trace Lane in south DeKalb County around 11 a.m.
The boy found the handgun in a box inside the house and fired the weapon, grazing his forehead, police said. The child was hospitalized in good condition on Tuesday afternoon.
Officers told Channel 2's Tom Jones here were eight people inside the home at the time, but no one will face charges in connection with the shooting.
"In this case it appears that the weapon was in a box. It was in a secure area but the child was able to gain access," DeKalb police spokeswoman Meeka Parish said.
Neighbors told Jones that the shooting served as a wake up call for everyone in the community.
"I know the average homeowner probably has guns in their home for protection, but when you have kids around you have to take extra precautions," said Sanethia Brinson.
