TROUP COUNTY, Ga. — Doctors are treating a 4-year-old girl who was hit in an accidental shooting Monday.

LaGrange police said the child was shot at an apartment complex around 8:30 a.m. in south LaGrange.

"We are definitely keeping our fingers crossed and praying and hoping for the best," said Sgt. Robert Kirby.

Shock and sadness swept through the apartment community.

"I just hate it," said BJ Ferrel. "It's just a tragedy. It really is."

Authorities found the wounded girl inside the apartment along with her mother and brothers, ages 2 and 7. Investigators are still trying to figure out what led up to the accidental shooting.

Zsa Zsa Heard, CEO of the LaGrange Housing Authority, rushed to the scene after hearing what happened.

"I was with them to make sure that they were OK and take them to the back," Heard said. "We wanted to make sure no one else had those children in their custody or asked them questions because they did not need to be interviewed by anyone. Only officials or police."

Police told Channel 2's Tom Regan that paramedics rushed the child to a local hospital. She was then transferred to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston.

The girl is now stable.
