NEWTON COUNTY, Ga. — Georgia officials recovered the body of a man who fell overboard in a Georgia lake.
The Georgia Department of Natural Resources responded to a drowning at 2:30 a.m. on Sunday in Bear Creek on Lake Jackson.

Deppish Kirkland, 72, of Savannah fell overboard while riding on a boat. The boat operator turned around to pick him up but couldn’t find Kirkland, according to the DNR.
Game wardens arrived and started a search.

Kirkland’s body was found and recovered from the water at 10:31 a.m. by game wardens and the Covington Dive Team.
The boat operator was arrested for boating under the influence (BUI). No other charges are expected at this time, according to the Georgia DNR.
The Georgia DNR says this is the only reported fatality on Georgia lakes over the Labor Day weekend.
