Arrest made in security guard’s shooting death outside Atlanta hookah bar

ATLANTA — Atlanta police have made an arrest in the shooting death of a security guard outside an Atlanta hookah bar.

Police said on Feb. 2, a man got into a fight with a 28-year-old security guard at the Encore Hookah bar and bistro on Luckie Street.

Once they were outside the bar, police said a man started shooting and one of the bullets hit the security guard. He later died at Grady Memorial Hospital.

The Atlanta Police Department arrested 21-year-old Damon Wilson Tuesday for his involvement in the shooting. Wilson was booked into the Fulton County Jail on Tuesday without bond.

Wilson faces charges of murder, aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony and simple battery.

Police said they are still searching for another suspect at this time.

The week of the security guard’s death, Atlanta police responded to shootings at seven nightclubs and bars. Encore in particular has been on the Atlanta mayor’s radar.

“The security guard who was trying to protect the facility and patrons, was murdered by someone,” Mayor Andre Dickens said. “What I’m going to be doing is having a conversation with that particular club, Encore, because they have been a violator a number of times.”

Atlanta police chief Rodney Bryant vowed tougher enforcement in and around drinking establishments that stay open late and are often backdrops to violent encounters.

“The mayor and I spoke this morning as well as yesterday on coming up with a very aggressive plan on what we are doing around nightclubs and night activity. You will see some developments as it relates to that,” Bryant said.
